What are S.M.A.R.T. Goals and why do they work so well?

Now that you have considered setting your goals or perhaps you have already set them, it’s time to know if those goals set are valid. 

This will be measured with what we call S.M.A.R.T goal setting. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, And Time bound. 

SMART is an established tool that you can also use to plan your goals.

S.M.A.R.T. Is An Acronym For:
• S- Specific: Your goals have to be specific to the point you are sure it’s what you want to achieve and also know the reason you want it so much.

These goals are not just aimless. 

If you are planning goals you have to ask questions like: 
1. What is it that I specifically want to accomplish?
2. When do I want to achieve it by?
3. Why is this goal important to me or others? 
4. Who is involved is achieving this goal? 5. Where is it located?
6. What resources do I need? 
• M- Measurable: You need to have a way of measuring how close you are to your goal or achieving a milestone on the way. That way, you are able to track your progress and stay motivated throughout the journey. 

• Assessing your progress is a factor that helps you to stay focused, meet deadlines and feel the excitement of moving closer to your goal. 

If your goal is measurable, it should address questions like: 
1. How much?
2. How many?
3. How will I know when I have achieved it? 
• A- Attainable/Achievable: Anything is possible. There is a difference between a goal and a fantasy.
Whether you think you can or think you can’t , you are right. 
Your goal needs to be achievable and realistic for it to be possibly successful. You should stretch your abilities or raise the level of your dreams.

If someone else can do it so can you. 

R- Relevant: Goals that are deemed relevant are practical and planned in such a way that implementing them will be easy in real life. 
This step ensures that the goal is important to you and that it also aligns with other relevant goals. 


At one point in our lives, we need support in achieving our goals. However, it is still important to retain control over those goals.
 Make sure that your intentions drive everyone forward but it should still remain humanly possible. 


When you set an achievable goal, you can easily identify previously neglected opportunities or resources that can draw you closer to it. 

Attainable goals answers questions like: 


How can I accomplish this goal? Remember that you are in control and responsible for making it to your goals. 


T- Time-bound: When your goal doesn’t have a measurement in time, your goal is not focused enough. Every goal needs to have a target deadline and milestones to focus on and to work towards its completion. 
This part of the smart goal criteria helps to prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your long-term goals.


Goals that have the time-bound quality answer the questions like: 
1. When will I start my journey towards my goals? 2. When will I achieve it?
3. What should I do now or next month?
4. What can and should I do today? 
5. What can and should I do in a few months? 


S.M.A.R.T. is a very reliable tool that I can proudly recommend to anyone who wants to succeed.
 It provides clarity, focus, motivation and feedback that anyone will be needing to achieve their goals. 


It is easy to use, uncomplicated but don’t let that fool you, it works if you use it and follow it S.M.A.R.T. 


I recommend you define your goals and write them down on the smart goals template. 
When you have written your goal statements down, you have automatically become further ahead than 90% of people on earth.
