How Goal Setting Is Linked To Higher Achievement

Five research-based ways to help children and teens attain their goals.

If you are an employed adult, you know that most organizations have written goals and objectives.

That’s because goal-setting is a common practice in the workplace—and for good reason.

Written goals provide a road map by which employees can measure their efforts and see how they contribute to the success of work teams and ultimately, to their companies.

In the same way, goal-setting helps motivate athletes, entrepreneurs, and individuals to achieve at higher levels of difficulty.

But goal-setting isn’t just for adults. In fact, being goal-oriented is a critical part of how children learn to become resourceful, which is defined as one’s ability to find and use available resources to solve problems and shape the future.

“Goal setters see future possibilities and the big picture,” says Rick McDaniel in a Huffington Post article. He discusses the important difference between being a goal setter and problem solver, the latter often getting bogged down in roadblocks.

“Goal setters,” he says, “are comfortable with risk, prefer innovation, and are energized by change.”

Research has uncovered many key aspects of goal setting theory and its link to success (Kleingeld, et al, 2011). Setting goals is linked with self-confidence, motivation, and autonomy (Locke & Lathan, 2006).

2015 study by psychologist Gail Matthews showed when people wrote down their goals, they were 33 percent more successful in achieving them than those who formulated outcomes in their heads.

Children learn to be resourceful through the practice of being goal-directed. In an article at Edutopia, teachers learn that fostering resourcefulness involves encouraging students to plan, strategize, prioritize, set goals, seek resources, and monitor their progress. 

In similar ways, parents teach resourcefulness when they walk beside children through the everyday practice of being goal-directed rather than attempting to set objectives and problem-solving for kids.

The common approach that applies to both parents and educators is to involve children in their own goal-setting and decision-making. This promotes independence and collaboration with adults simultaneously.

The following strategies apply the research on goal-setting at home, in the classroom, or on the sports field.

Five Ways to Help Children Set and Achieve Goals

Children and teens become effective goal-setters when they understand and develop five action-oriented behaviors and incorporate these actions with each goal set.

  1. Put goals in writing. Goals that are written are concrete and motivational. Making progress toward written goals increases feelings of success and well-being.
  2. Using a goal-setting template can help children track their successes. A goal-setting smartphone app may motivate tech-savvy children even more. Some apps have gaming features that make goal-setting a fun way to achieve results and build new habits.
  3. Self-commit. For a goal to be motivating to a child, it must give meaning to a mental or physical action to which a child feels committed. This self-commitment becomes a key element in self-regulation, a child’s ability to monitor, control, and alter his own behaviors. This doesn’t mean that parents or teachers should not be involved in goal-setting. In fact, adults can serve as goal facilitators—helping kids see options, asking core questions, and providing supportive feedback.
  4. Be specific. Goals must be much more specific than raising a grade or improving performance on the soccer field. Here’s a simple formula. 1) I will [raise my grade in algebra from a C to a B]; 2) By doing what? [regular homework, and spending time with an online algebra program or game]; 3) When? How? With Whom? [increase daily algebra homework by 15 minutes to include a fun online interactive algebra practice; spend 15 fewer minutes on social media; get support from teacher/tutor for things that are not understood]; 4) Measured by [increased time spent; improved weekly test scores].
  5. Stretch for difficulty. Goals should always be challenging enough to be attainable, but not so challenging that they become sources of major setbacks. When working with a child on goal-setting, listen to what they think they can achieve rather than what you want them to achieve.
  6. Seek feedback and support. Part of the fun and motivation of setting goals is working on them in a supportive group environment. Even though goals are often individual in nature, children should be able to recognize how their goal is tied to their family values, the aspirations of a sports team, or the aim of a specific curriculum. When they understand this connection, they feel more open to seeking feedback and receiving support from adults. When goals are achieved, it’s time to celebrate with others!

When we’re starting out, it’s tempting to treat goal-setting as an all or nothing mindset, where aiming to excel, establish a great reputation and be recognised as successful are the daily focuses of our lives.

Over time we may come to realise that big goals are in many ways like onions, with multi-layers contributing to the finished product, each needing to be nurtured and developed. It’s important to make time for them to grow and be recognised as separate components, with the layers eventually coming together to make the ultimate result.

We maybe set aside time to promote ourselves on social media, update our accounts, complete our journal, do some yoga practice, go online for a special class, but it’s only when our goals are absorbed into our way of life and become second-nature, a habit, that they become an automatic part of our functioning, pulling together to make a well-rounded quality of life.

By making your goals a habit you’re living each day to the full, enjoying what you’re doing and are less distracted by how much it advances your route to success. You simply keep going, working with your master plan towards the big picture, whilst incorporating positive practices into your daily life.

You may have identified stepping-stones, actions and decisions that need to be taken everyday to achieve your goal. For example, progressing your business growth may require a specific number of contacts to be made on a regular basis, losing weight may include daily choices about exercise and what to eat, running a marathon may mean covering a certain distance each week. Doing something big or small that becomes a part of your regular mindset and commitment.

Even on relatively inactive days or those times when other things take precedence it’s important to make some acknowledgement of your ultimate focus. That way, your actions gradually become a habit. Remind yourself of your goals by having them in plain sight on a vision board, on your screen saver or by writing them in the front of your journal or diary, so that you connect with them regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. Ensure that they’re always with you.

You may have high-lighted specific big goals as the focus for your efforts, but habits come about through being a reasonably comfortable, regular commitment, rather than being so big that you risk becoming overwhelmed or required to park other areas of your life. Doing something that’s straightforward and relatively easy to include has a greater chance of becoming a habit and subsequently resulting in success.

That’s why it’s best to break big goals down into smaller segments, bite-sized chunks that don’t need too much thought or can be arranged in advance. Otherwise, on busy, stressful days all your good intentions risk being cast to one side, as you default to easier, more familiar habit patterns, or reject them as you deal with pressing matters that require all your attention.

Some people find that making lists is a positive way to introduce a new habit, breaking down a larger goal into achievable actions each day. Setting a timer can help you manage how long to spend on each task, so ensuring there’s real focus on the task in hand, whilst also avoiding becoming too absorbed for too long on a single piece of work.

It’s good to cultivate the habit of achieving something, however small, each day. That mindset is proactive, motivational and encourages you to intermittently review your plans, raise the bar and move them forwards. Even a quick phone call or email can be enough to make progress.

When that outlook has become a habit, there’s an enthusiastic approach to what can be achieved each day; something small on busy days, taking larger steps when there’s the time and energy available.

Accountability is often important, having someone to regularly check-in with, who wants to know what you’ve done, where you’re up to, what the likely outcome could be. Scheduling an appointment when you have to explain yourself is incredibly motivational; something that’s only too evident on the days before a slimmer’s class has a weigh-in!

But a coach or mentor can also help iron out any issues, steer or guide you as to available options, help you re-focus after a set-back. Someone who’s on your side, who’s with you during your struggles, who understands what you’re going through can make a massive difference to your motivation levels.

Making your goals a habit is an important contributor to your success, but don’t allow yourself to be too tied down by them. Allow yourself to enjoy the journey and maybe even appreciate occasional detours along the way. After all, once you reach your destination you may be at a loss as to what to do next or simply be inspired to start again and set some new goals.

Sometimes it’s exciting not to be too rigid about chasing your initial goals. It can be satisfying to enjoy exploring new opportunities and follow where they lead. Unexpected adventures can be a reward in themselves. Take time to value each experience that presents itself as you progress. Then, your goal-motivated mindset will become a habit, as well as a stimulating and enjoyable contributor to your way of thinking.

The Importance Of Setting Goals

We’re now in second half of 2018, and I’m sure that most of us here have set our sights on our new goals for this year.

However, for some people, setting goals could prove to be an overwhelming task.

Many others set goals and then forget about it until the next year. And then there’s some who don’t even bother setting any for themselves.

I believe that goals are important to our lives; hence, I will first highlight the importance of setting goals. Then, I will share to you some tips which you could use to set effective goals.

The Importance of Setting Goals

Why is setting goals important? Setting goals is fundamental to one’s long-term success because it is like our very own life roadmap. Goals bring us to where we want to be in the future just like how a roadmap brings us from point A to point B.

Think about it, if we do not have any goals, chances are we do not know what we want in life. It’s like getting lost in the woods, without any direction to follow.

SMART Goal System

As mentioned earlier, many people set goals for themselves, but how many of these goals are actually realized? Many people still have goals which they set 10 years ago!

I will share with you how to set goals effectively via the SMART goal system. Why SMART goal? By setting SMART goals, you’re actually making your roadmap to your destinations shorter and easier.

Setting SMART goals simply means the goals you set must satisfy the following SMART criteria:

Specific – Your goal must be as specific as possible. It must not be vague. Here’s some questions to guide you to set a specific goal:

What do I want to achieve? 
Why is achieving this goal important for me?

Who do I want to become?

When do I want to achieve it?

Where is the location?

Measurable – You must be able to measure the progress of your goal. It has to be quantifiable. For example, if my goal is to be a millionaire, I’ll know that I’m halfway there when I have $500,000, and I have achieved my goal when I have $1,000,000.

Attainable – The keyword for this component is ‘resources‘. An attainable goal simply means you can achieve that using the resources (time, money, energy) that you have which allow you to stay committed to achieving this goal.

Realistic – Try to set a goal which is neither too challenging nor too easy. It has to make you feel excited and challenged at the same time. It is good to set challenging goals for yourself, but if it’s too a challenging goal, you might be discouraged and give up after some time.

Likewise, a very easy goal might make you lose interest, and you don’t feel much fulfilled achieving that goal. A simple tip to do this is to break down your primary goal into smaller milestones.

Achieving these milestones is not as overwhelming as having to achieve the big goal in one shot. Once you achieve one milestone, you will feel more motivated and fired up to achieve the next milestones.

Timely – Many people set wonderful goals for themselves, but they often miss this out – the time component. It is important to set a time frame or deadline for your goal. I cannot stress enough the importance of setting a time frame for each of your goals.

Without a time frame, there is no sense of urgency and you might delay your efforts to achieve that goal. “Oh, I’ll do it later. Next week. Next month.” Some people even forget about it!

This is why many people still dream of the same thing for the past 10 years!

Take Massive Action

That’s the SMART system for you. Now is the time to take some action. Start by identifying the goals and then write it down in a big piece of paper, and place it at somewhere near to you so you could read it all the time.

Remember, nothing gets done unless you take action, because the bridge between dreams and reality is ACTION!!

1. Have a plan to achieve your goals

Proper goal setting is an extremely important step but figuring out what you have to do to accomplish the goal is paramount. Come up with the steps. milestones , who you need to become, what you have to learn, who you need to meet etc.

2. KEEP YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE

Find a friend, family member or another person you trust and share your list of goals with them. You can also share the list with a mentor or life coach. Sharing your list will make you more accountable and give you a partner who will work with you through frustrations or roadblocks. The right partner can help you stay on course, transform obstacles into opportunities and avoid procrastination.

3. Have the proper mindset

“Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.” The proper mindset for success is to know that anything can be learned. Also learn how to avoid procrastination and to cultivate positive habits,

4. CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES

Goal setting doesn’t have to be a boring set of tasks to check off. When you’re planning your goals, include ways to celebrate your successes. If you’re working toward financial freedom, set aside a budget for a treat when you reach a certain goal. Celebrate relationship milestones. It will help you stay focused – while also being present in the moment.

Effective goal setting/planning helps you stay focused, keeps you accountable and is the single most important aspect of reaching your goals, dreams or vision.
